In partnership with the Province of Gelderland, the On the Move project has overseen the development of three master theses focused on the challenges of transitioning toward a more sustainable train system in the region.
Gelderland plays a critical role in some of the most important transport corridors in both the Netherlands and Europe. However, approximately 250 km of its rail network is still operated by diesel-powered trains, making the shift to more sustainable alternatives a complex undertaking. This transition involves multiple stakeholders and navigating various uncertainties, making it a multifaceted challenge for the province.
Through this collaboration between the Province of Gelderland and Radboud University, the three master theses have provided valuable insights into these challenges and helped pilot a process for tackling them. The research has given the province a deeper understanding of the complexities involved and will serve as a foundation for future initiatives aimed at achieving a sustainable rail network.
